Rue Sainte-Anne is the old road through the village, and it follows the St. Lawrence. The Basilica of Sainte-Anne, the grey stone church with the two bell towers, is the building everyone gives directions by. Walk along from there and you pass old stone houses and manors from the days of the seigneury, most of them still lived in.
Down at the water, parc de la Commune is where people go on a warm evening. There’s a boardwalk out over the shoreline, a small beach with lounge chairs, a boat ramp, and the bike path that runs along the river toward Boucherville. From the quai de Bellevue, a river shuttle crosses to Pointe-aux-Trembles and the Old Port. In summers when the water’s high enough, a smaller boat with room for bikes also loops over to Repentigny, so you can ride the other shore and come home by water.

Past the 30, it’s farm country
Once you cross the 30, Varennes turns into fields quickly. The rangs and montées run straight between big cropland, with the odd dairy farm or horse stable along the way. Houses out here sit back from the road at the end of long driveways, which is about the easiest setup the van ever gets. We pull in behind the car and start.
The roads are what gets the car dirty. At planting time and again at harvest, tractors carry mud from the fields onto the pavement, and it dries into a brown crust along the doors and up inside the wheel wells. The 30, the 132, and the long way to our bay
Getting to the island from here means the 132 west through Boucherville toward the tunnel, or the 30 over to the 20. Both carry plenty of heavy trucks, and from December to March they throw brine and sand at whoever’s behind them. The salt dries white on the back hatch and the lower doors. The sand, at highway speed, slowly pits the front of the hood and the mirrors.
That’s the one case where we’d tell someone in Varennes the drive to Van Horne is worth it. A ceramic coating makes salt and road film rinse off far more easily for years, and paint correction takes out the fine marks a wash can’t. Both need the bay, so plan them for a day you’re already headed into Montreal.

From the village to the rangs
We’re on a rang out past the 30 and by June the car is brown from the farm road. Is it worth doing before the harvest makes it worse again?
We’d say yes. Mud that dries on in April and stays there all summer keeps the lower doors and wheel wells damp every time it rains. Long driveways are no trouble for the van.
I drive the 30 behind the trucks every day and the front of my hood looks sandblasted. Can a detail fix that?
Partly. A detail gets the paint clean, but the dull, pitted look comes from grit hitting the car at highway speed, and washing won’t take it out. Paint correction can polish away the lighter marks, and that’s done at the shop. Chips that go right through the paint need touch-up paint, because polishing won’t hide them. If you’re having the paint corrected anyway, a ceramic coating on top makes the next winter of brine a lot easier to rinse off.
I tow the boat down to the ramp at parc de la Commune most weekends. What is that doing to the truck?
Mostly it hits the back end and the inside. Backing down a wet ramp throws river water and sand up onto the rear bumper and the hitch, and wet life jackets and towels leave the cab damp and a little musty by August.
