The 132 and the bridge, all winter

If you work on the island, your morning probably ends at the Jacques-Cartier, whether you came along the 132 by the river or up Taschereau. From December on, that whole approach is wet with brine. You creep toward the bridge behind a bus or a truck and sit in its spray the whole way, and the wind coming off the St. Lawrence pushes it onto the side of the car too.
It dries into a grey film on the lower doors, the wheels and the back hatch, and the salt packs into the seams around the trim. Inside, it comes in on your boots and sets into the driver’s mat. Weekends on this side of the river
In summer, rue Saint-Charles in Vieux-Longueuil is where people go for brunch or a drink on a terrace, and the old street is lined with restaurants and cafés. From Parc LeMoyne, a green footbridge takes you over the highway to Parc Marie-Victorin and the bike path along the water, with the Montreal skyline right across from you.
Parc Michel-Chartrand is the other place everyone knows. It’s a proper forest in the middle of the city, with trails, small lakes and a marsh you can walk out over. Once the snow comes, people cross-country ski the trails and take the kids to the sledding slope. That usually means wet boots and snow melting into the cargo mat on the drive home.

Old duplex streets, then driveways
Close to Saint-Charles and the river, Longueuil is older duplexes and houses set near each other, and a lot of cars live at the curb or in a short strip beside the house. That works for us as long as we can get the van close and open every door. Old Greenfield Park, on the Saint-Lambert side of Taschereau, is a lot like that too.
Further in, through Saint-Hubert and the newer part of Greenfield Park, it turns into bungalows and two-storey houses with a driveway out front. That’s the easiest setup there is. The van pulls up behind the car and we start.

Hand washes, paint correction and ceramic coating are done in the bay in Côte-des-Neiges. If you’re on the 132 all winter, a coating is the one worth the drive. Brine and road film don’t grip coated paint as well, so the car rinses clean with a lot less work.

I’m in an upper duplex a couple of streets off Saint-Charles and the car sits out front. Can you work there?
Usually, yes. The van has to stop close to the car, and we need enough room to open the doors on both sides. Most streets in the old part of Longueuil give us that. If yours is tight, mention it when you book and we’ll sort out the best spot with you.
I take the 132 and the Jacques-Cartier every day. How often should the salt come off in winter?
