Quiet streets named after towns in France
Maison Garth, Lorraine
Lorraine was planned as a town of houses, and it still drives like one. There are no traffic lights, the power lines are buried, and the streets carry the names of towns in Lorraine, France: boulevard de Nancy, avenue de Metz, avenue de Vittel, rue d’Épinal. Off the boulevards, many of the little streets called place curl into a cul-de-sac.
The lots are big, and some of them back straight onto the woods. With a wide driveway and a garage, there’s plenty of room, so the van pulls up beside the car and we get started. The 640 cuts the town in two, Lorraine-en-Haut on the north side and Lorraine-en-Bas running down toward the Mille Îles. We come to both.
Out in the Grand Coteau
A big part of town borders the Forêt du Grand Coteau. The trails start behind the Centre culturel Laurent G. Belley on boulevard de Montbéliard and run through hilly woods and over little wooden bridges across the Dominique-Juteau stream, all the way over to the parc des Hêtres in Blainville. It’s open all year. In summer you’ll see dog walkers, trail runners and mountain bikes, and in winter it’s snowshoes and fat bikes. Down by the river, the Domaine Garth has the old stone house and barn, with walking paths around the grounds.
All of that comes home in the car. Muddy paws and wet dog hair end up in the cargo area, and a bike tire leaves a stripe on the seat. In the fall the woods drop a lot of leaves, and they pile up under the wipers and in the door jambs. Left there for a few weeks, wet leaves can stain lighter paint brown. The 640 in winter, and the drive down to Van Horne
Most mornings, getting into Montreal from Lorraine means the 640 and then the 15 south. From December to March both are wet with brine, and the trucks ahead of you spray it across the hood and down the sides. By February there’s a grey crust on the lower doors, and the mats have white rings from the slush on your boots.
The same highways bring you to our shop in about half an hour, and that’s where washes, paint correction and ceramic coating happen. If you make the trip once, make it for a ceramic coating. Road film and leaves have a harder time sticking to coated paint, so the car rinses clean faster all winter. If the paint already has swirls from automatic car washes, paint correction goes first.

From the houses by the woods
Our dog comes back from the Grand Coteau soaked and muddy, and now the back of the SUV smells like it. Can you get that out?
Usually, yes. Book a Mobile Prestige Interior. Dog hair weaves itself into the cargo carpet and a regular vacuum leaves most of it behind, so that’s where most of the time goes. The smell tends to come from damp under the mats and in the carpet, and it usually fades once that’s cleaned out and dried.
We’re at the very end of a place, right in the cul-de-sac. Is there room back there for your van to park and turn around?
There should be. The van parks beside the car, and on most of these lots the driveway is wide enough for both. The round end of the cul-de-sac gives it room to turn around when we’re done.
Our yard backs onto the Grand Coteau, and every spring the car ends up under a yellow layer of pollen. What gets that off?
At home, a Mobile Prestige Exterior. Pollen settles on the paint, and it also collects under the wipers and in the door jambs, where a quick rinse misses it. We clean all of it in the driveway. If you’d rather come to us, a hand wash at the shop on Van Horne takes it off the paint.
