Three minutes to the shop

There’s no shopping street in Hampstead, so most errands already mean a short drive out of town. Swinging by Van Horne is one of the shorter ones. An Express hand wash takes about 20 minutes, which is short enough to wait. A Signature wash takes about 50.

Big trees, quiet streets, and what they leave on the car
Hampstead was planned as a garden city, and you can still feel it. The streets curve on purpose to keep through traffic out, the houses sit on big lots, and the trees on the side streets have had a long time to grow. A good part of the town used to be a golf course, which is why it’s so flat. Queen Mary Road is the main way in and out, past the old house that serves as Town Hall, and it takes you east toward Côte-des-Neiges and our shop.

A walking path links it with Councillors Park and Applewood Park, and there’s a little cut-through between Thurlow and Granville that’s handy on foot.
The big trees leave a bit of sap in early summer, and the birds in the branches leave the rest. In the fall, wet leaves pile up in the gap below the windshield and stain the paint if they sit. Then winter brings salt on the roads out of town, and since every errand means leaving Hampstead, the car picks some up on almost every trip. Fresh droppings and salt come off with a proper hand wash. Once something’s been baked on for a few weeks, it can take a polish. A ceramic coating won’t stop anything from landing, but it makes that stuff a lot easier to get off.
