Fields, woods and long driveways
Fort Chambly, next door to Carignan
Get off the main roads and Carignan turns into country pretty quickly. Chemin Salaberry and chemin Bellerive run past farm fields and stands of trees, and a lot of the houses sit on big lots with long driveways, some of them going right down to the Rivière L’Acadie. On the residential streets, in the Domaine off Grande-Allée or around the Parchemin school, the houses are closer together, but the car still lives in a driveway. For us that’s an easy setup.
If your yard backs onto the woods, you know the fall routine. Leaves land on the car from September on and pack into the gap under the windshield and around the hatch. When they sit there wet, they stain light paint brown.
The roads add their own layer. Bellerive gets a lot of truck traffic, and after the spring thaw the edges along the fields stay muddy for a while, so the car comes home with a dried crust behind the wheels and along the bottom of the doors. Weekends on the L’Acadie and the basin
The river winds right through town, and people here really do paddle it. There’s a kayak and paddleboard launch on chemin Bellerive at rue Thérèse, by the old railway bridge, and another on rue des Roses on Île Goyer that puts you out on the Chambly basin.
If you ride, the Route verte follows the old rail line through town and crosses the L’Acadie into Chambly on the wooden bridge at Parc Desautels. On the islands, a trail through the woods at the north tip of Île aux Lièvres takes you over to Île Goyer, and from there Fort Chambly is a short ride across on the Chambly side. The city keeps the trails cleared in winter, so the snowshoes come out too.
By the end of the summer, all of that has come home in the back of the car: river mud on the mats, sand in the seat rails and a damp smell from the paddling gear. That’s interior work, and it’s easy to do at the house.

From chemin Bellerive to the fields
When the fields along chemin Salaberry get spread in the spring, the car smells like the farm for a week. Can you get that out?
Mostly, yes. The smell gets into the carpet, the mats and the seat fabric, and a Mobile Prestige Interior cleans all of that in your driveway. If it has really settled in, ask about the odour treatment when you book. It helps to keep the windows up and the air on recirculate while they’re spreading.
We live on chemin Bellerive with the trucks going by, and I wipe the dust off the car with a cloth most mornings. Is that hurting the paint?
Over time, yes. A dry cloth drags the grit across the paint and leaves fine swirls, and the finish starts to look dull.
