What the mountain leaves in your car
The old mill, Mont-Saint-Bruno
Mont Saint-Bruno is the reason a lot of people live here. The national park has five lakes, an old mill and long trails under beech and maple, and on a nice Sunday in October the lots by the visitor centre fill up early. Right beside it, Ski Saint-Bruno keeps its runs lit at night, so you see cars heading up after school and after work all winter.
The park grooms its cross-country trails once the snow is down, and on a few weeknights in January and February you can ski them until nine. Then it all goes back in the car. Ski boots drip on the cargo carpet for months, and the slush from the parking lot dries into white salt lines on the mats.
From late August into October, the orchard inside the park opens for picking, just off rang des Vingt-Cinq. It’s a short walk from the parking, but it’s still an orchard, so you come home with muddy shoes, crushed leaves on the floor and a couple of bags of apples sliding around the trunk. A bruised apple leaks, and the juice goes sticky in the carpet if nobody gets to it. Big lots under tall trees
Old Saint-Bruno sits around the Lac du Village and along rue Montarville, with the church, older houses and, on summer Saturdays until the end of October, the public market at Place du Village. From there the streets curve out through bungalows and cottages on big lots, most of them under old trees. The newer neighbourhoods are down toward the 30.
Those trees shade the driveway, which is lovely in July. It also means a car stays damp for a long time after rain, so road dirt stays stuck to it longer than it would in the sun. In the fall, leaves pile into the channel under the windshield and around the hood, and they’re worth clearing out before the first snow.
For us, a big lot is the easiest setup there is. The van pulls in behind the car and there’s room to work all the way around it. If the car usually sleeps in the garage, leave it out in the driveway the morning we come so we can open every door.

Hand washes, paint correction and ceramic coating happen at the shop in Côte-des-Neiges. If you’re driving into Montreal anyway, that’s a good day to drop the car off. A coating makes the slush from the next winter much easier to rinse away.
The 30, the 116 and the 20
Most trips out of Saint-Bruno start on one of these. The 30 is the South Shore’s truck route, and between the 10 and the 20 it crawls at almost any hour. The 116 runs past the Promenades into Saint-Hubert, and the 20 heads west toward Longueuil and the bridges.
Creeping along behind a truck in January is hard on a car. Every time traffic moves, the truck ahead throws brine and sand at your grille and windshield, and a grey film builds up on the hood and the lower doors that rain won’t shift. The Promenades lot adds its own share, because a lot that big is slush and grit from one end to the other in winter, and you carry it back to the car on your boots.

Before the van comes out
We ski at Ski Saint-Bruno a couple of nights a week. Is it worth cleaning the inside before the season’s over?
Yes. We’d do it once around the middle of the season and again when the hill closes in spring. Salt lines in the carpet get harder to lift the longer they sit, and a cargo area that holds wet gear all winter starts to smell by March. The lots at the park were packed on an October Sunday, and I came back to a white scuff on my door from someone else’s. Can you get that out?
Often, yes. If the other car’s paint rubbed off onto yours, it’s sitting on top of your clear coat, and polishing can lift it. That’s paint correction, which we do in the bay at our Van Horne shop, not in the driveway. If the door is dented, or the scrape goes down to the primer, polishing can’t fix that.

Usually, if it hasn’t been left for weeks. Apple juice is mostly sugar, so it turns sticky and then dark as it dries. Pick up the fruit, blot what you can, and mention the spill when you book a Mobile Prestige Interior so we know where to start.
