New subdivisions by the 15, farm country out west

Mirabel covers a lot of ground, and it feels like two places. Along the 15, in Domaine-Vert Nord, Saint-Janvier, Saint-Canut and Mirabel-en-Haut, it’s young families in new houses, fresh asphalt and streets that were fields not long ago. Head west toward Sainte-Scholastique, Saint-Benoît and Saint-Hermas and it turns into farms, horse paddocks and orchards, with houses set way back at the end of long driveways. The airport sits in between, and the Airbus plant there is where the A220 gets built.
Each side is hard on a car in its own way. In the new neighbourhoods there’s always a building site down the street, and the fine grey dust settles on everything parked outside. Out on the country roads it’s mud. Tractors drag it onto the pavement in spring and again at harvest, and a gravel driveway throws dust and little stones up the sides of the car. Neither should be wiped off dry, which is why a real mobile detail beats a quick pass with a rag.
Apples in the fall, maple in the spring
From late August through October, families drive out to pick apples at the orchards along rang de la Fresnière and the Côte des Saints. The big-name cider orchards in Saint-Joseph-du-Lac are just over the line in the next town. In March and April it’s sugar-shack season, and Saint-Benoît has a string of them along rang Saint-Vincent, with maple taffy rolled on the snow out front.
The rest of the year there’s the Bois-de-Belle-Rivière, where you can walk the woods with the dog in summer and skate a trail cut through the trees in winter. For shopping, Premium Outlets Montréal sits right off exit 28, an outdoor village of stores that pulls people up from the city on weekends.
Most of that ends up in the car. There’s dog hair and wet paws after the trails, and a bag of apples that leaked in the trunk. Kids come back from the sugar shack with sticky fingers and touch every surface on the way home.
The 15, the 50 and a lot of salt
A lot of Mirabel drives to work on the 15 south, or comes across on the 50 from the Saint-Benoît side to meet it. In winter that’s a long stretch of highway spray every morning and again every evening, and by February it’s a white film from the rocker panels up to the door handles. For a car that spends that much time on the highway, a ceramic coating is the shop job that pays off most. Coated paint lets go of salt spray more easily, so a rinse between storms does a lot more. It does mean bringing the car down to Van Horne, about 40 minutes each way outside rush hour and longer when the 15 is backed up at the bridges. October is a good month for it, before the roads turn white.

We’re on a farm out in Saint-Hermas with a long gravel driveway. Can the van make it up to the house?
It should. If a regular car can get up your driveway, the van can too. What we need at the top is a fairly flat spot next to your car with room to open all the doors, and a barnyard or the side of a shed works fine. Mention the driveway when you book so we know what to expect.
Our pickup works on the farm and it looks it. Will you take on a truck that dirty?

Between apple picking and sugar-shack season, the back seat is a disaster. Is that an interior job?
