Most of Boucherville is houses with a driveway, which is the easiest place for us to work. Around Champ du Papillon and the Jardins Sabrevois it’s cottages, bungalows and split-levels from the seventies and eighties, most with a garage and a driveway out front. Harmonie is newer and built the same way. In Le Boisé the lots are big, there are no sidewalks, and the car can end up parked a long way back from the street.
The old village is tighter. The streets are narrow, and a lot of the old houses sit close to the sidewalk with a short driveway beside them. We work there too. The van just has to stop near the car, and we need room to open every door.
Weekends on the islands
The Parc national des Îles-de-Boucherville is five small islands in the St. Lawrence, and you drive in at the last exit before the tunnel. In summer people rent canoes and kayaks to paddle the channels, ride the bike paths that loop around the islands, and look for the white-tailed deer on Île Sainte-Marguerite. You can leave the car at home, too. The river shuttle from the quai Yvon-Julien on Marie-Victorin takes bikes, it’s free for Boucherville residents, and it gets you to Île Grosbois in about 15 minutes.
The park stays open in winter, with ski trails, snowshoe loops and fatbikes on Île Sainte-Marguerite. So the car comes home with sand and wet gear in the back all summer, and in winter the snow off everyone’s boots melts into the mats on the drive back. The old village and the river road
Boulevard Marie-Victorin follows the river right through the old village. At the Place de l’église, the stone Église Sainte-Famille stands between the old convent and the old presbytery, and the local heritage society painted little blue footprints on the sidewalks that walk you from one old house to the next. It’s a good way to spend a Sunday morning.
Keep going east on the bike path by the water and you reach Parc de la Frayère, where the Rivière aux Pins runs into the St. Lawrence. There’s a small bridge over the dam where people stop to watch the birds and the fish, and dirt and gravel trails through the marsh. The path carries on all the way to Varennes.
The tunnel, twice a day
If you work on the island, you probably take the 20 to the tunnel, and with the repairs going on down there, a lot of that trip is spent crawling. In winter the 20 is wet with brine from Boucherville to the tunnel entrance. Inside, there’s no wind or rain to carry the spray away, so you sit in the mist from the truck in front of you. It settles on the windshield, the headlights and the whole front of the car as a grey film, and the lower doors and the back hatch pick it up too.
