Summer on the St. Lawrence side
The boardwalk to Île Lebel, Repentigny
Rue Notre-Dame follows the St. Lawrence through old Repentigny, and on a warm day that’s where everybody ends up. The parc-plage Saint-Laurent has rows of parasols, beach volleyball and misters for the heat. You can’t swim there, but nobody seems to mind. A wooden boardwalk runs along the shore from the beach to Île Lebel, where there’s a walking loop, picnic tables and enough birds to keep the people with binoculars busy. In summer a small boat leaves the parc Saint-Laurent dock with room for bikes and crosses to Varennes and Pointe-aux-Trembles.
Living that close to the water shows up on the car. When the wind comes up off the river it carries a fine spray and the dust off the shore paths, and the side of the car facing the water takes most of it. It dries into spots on the glass and the paint that the next rain doesn’t wash away.
When the van’s working near the water around lunch, the team likes stopping for a poutine at L’Étoile Notre-Dame, a short walk from Île Lebel.
Le Gardeur and the L’Assomption
North of the 40, Le Gardeur sits along the Rivière L’Assomption. It’s quieter out there, street after street of houses with a driveway, which is the easiest setup we get. A bike path follows the river north toward the town of L’Assomption, and there’s a small lookout on boulevard de L’Assomption where the paths meet, with picnic tables over the water.
Between that path and the Route Verte along the St. Lawrence, plenty of cars here spend the whole summer with a bike rack on the back. By fall the hatch has a dirty outline where the pads sat, and the cargo area has whatever came off the tires.
Winter on the 40, and why some work means a drive in
If you work in the city, you’re probably on the 40 over the Charles-De Gaulle bridge, or taking Notre-Dame across the Le Gardeur bridge into Pointe-aux-Trembles. The 40 is also the truck route east toward Quebec City, and in winter the spray off those trailers is brown with brine and sand. It piles up behind the wheels, along the rocker panels and across the back of an SUV, where the air behind the car throws it onto the hatch. The van can’t do washes, paint correction or ceramic coating. Those need our bay at 5300 Van Horne, and from Repentigny it’s the 40 west nearly the whole way, about 35 minutes when traffic is moving. At rush hour it’s a lot longer, so a Saturday morning is the easy time to come in. If you’re making the trip for a ceramic coating, do it in the fall before the brine starts.

From the river side and up in Le Gardeur
We walk the dog at Île Lebel most mornings, and the back seat is full of hair and grey dust from the trail. Which detail is that?
Mobile Prestige Interior. The loop at Île Lebel is stone dust, and it packs into the carpet and the seat seams right along with the hair, so a gas-station vacuum only gets the top layer. Same goes for a dog coming back from the run at parc Saint-Laurent. If the dog rides in the cargo area, mention it when you book so we plan the time for it.
The bike rack stays on our hatch from May to October. Is the paint under it OK?
Take the rack off and have a look. Most of what you see is grit that got under the pads and straps and left a grimy outline, and a Mobile Prestige Exterior takes that off. Fine scratches that are still there after a wash can usually be polished out with paint correction, which happens at the shop. If you can, take the rack off before we get there.
Our house on Notre-Dame faces the river and the windows are always spotted. Is that the river?
Probably. When the wind comes in off the St. Lawrence it carries fine spray and dust from the shore, and it dries into spots on whatever faces the water.
